A comprehensive new global study has revealed that India leads the world in researcher mobility intentions, with a staggering 52% of country-based researchers planning to migrate abroad within the next few years.

This looming exodus comes at a critical juncture. While India has scaled the global ranks to become the world’s third-largest producer of scientific research, it is simultaneously battling severe shortages in its domestic medical workforce and critical vacancies within its premier health research institutions. The widening gap between India’s massive scientific output and its ability to retain top-tier talent poses a direct threat to the country’s healthcare infrastructure, domestic drug discovery, and long-term public health outcomes.

Surveying more than 3,200 researchers across 113 countries, the report exposed an acute disparity in how scientists view their career trajectories depending on their home base.
