The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, alongside the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has intensified multi-institutional investigations into the seasonal outbreak.
While Chandipura virus (CHPV) remains a relatively uncommon pathogen, its clinical hallmark—rapidly progressive brain inflammation, known medically as Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES)—disproportionately strikes children under the age of 15. What Is Chandipura Virus?

Chandipura virus is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Vesiculovirus genus within the Rhabdoviridae family—the same family that encompasses the rabies virus. First isolated in 1965 during an outbreak in Chandipura village in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district, the pathogen was initially considered a minor medical curiosity. Over subsequent decades, however, it emerged as a significant neurotropic agent capable of causing lethal encephalitis outbreaks in central, western, and southern India.

While exploratory laboratory studies have examined candidate antivirals such as favipiravir and ribavirin in in vitro or animal models, experts caution against off-label clinical application. Peer-reviewed reviews published in late 2024 explicitly note that these molecules lack established safety and efficacy profiles for pediatric encephalitis patients, making clinical trials necessary before any routine adoption.

Practical Prevention Guidelines for Households

Because no vaccine exists, interrupting vector contact remains the primary defense against Chandipura virus. Public health authorities recommend the following preventive measures for families living in or visiting affected rural and peri-urban regions:
  • Environmental Remediation: Seal cracks, crevices, and deep fissures in mud, brick, or plaster walls where sandflies rest.

Public Health Outlook and Ongoing Challenges

The Union Health Ministry’s multi-agency approach—integrating human health, veterinary science, and entomology—represents an advanced framework for curbing zoonotic and vector-borne outbreaks. Expanding the national hospital-based AES surveillance network across 15 tertiary-care facilities has improved early case detection compared to past decades.
Nevertheless, key scientific hurdles remain. Mapping the precise reservoir host that harbors CHPV between human seasonal outbreaks remains incomplete. Diagnostic confirmation in resource-limited rural settings also presents logistics challenges, requiring specialized molecular testing (RT-PCR) or serological assays available primarily at regional reference laboratories like the ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV).
For communities and parents in affected regions, the core guidance remains clear: protect children against insect bites, maintain clean living environments, and seek immediate emergency hospital care whenever a high fever is accompanied by changes in behavior, extreme drowsiness, or seizures.
