Chandigarh, May 28, 2025 – The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, held a special ceremony on Wednesday to honour its medical, para-medical staff, and volunteers for their outstanding service during Operation Sindoor in Jammu and Kashmir.
Operation Sindoor, a critical humanitarian and medical mission, saw PGIMER’s team working tirelessly at ground zero to provide life-saving support under extremely challenging conditions. The institute recognized not only doctors and nurses but also hospital attendants, volunteers, and the transport team, all of whom played pivotal roles in the mission’s success.
Heroes on the Frontline
The medical team, comprising specialists such as Dr. Amit Sharma (anaesthesia), Dr. Swapnesh Sahu (general and vascular surgery), Dr. Himanshu Kanwat (orthopedics), Dr. Mahesh Jangra (plastic surgery), Dr. Sachin Kumar (anaesthesia), Dr. Gokulakrishnan Hari (general and vascular surgery), Dr. Udit Jayant (orthopedics), and Dr. Sachin C. Nair (plastic surgery), provided critical trauma stabilization and performed emergency surgeries in makeshift medical zones.
Three nursing officers—Narinder Tyagi, Ramesh Kumar, and Krishan Kumar—were lauded for their unwavering commitment to patient care, post-surgical monitoring, and emergency response throughout the operation.
Hospital attendant Darshan Singh was recognized for his vital contributions in maintaining operational hygiene and assisting patients under field conditions.
Volunteers and Logistical Support
Volunteers from Vishav Manav Ruhani Kendra, Manmohan and Shyam Paswan, were also felicitated for their compassionate assistance in patient care coordination, movement, and emotional support to those affected during the crisis.
The Transport Department team, including Shiv Nath, Pradeep Kumar, Lakhvir Singh, Jasvir Singh, Rajveer Singh, Sandeep Singh, Jagtar Singh, Jatinder Singh, Malkit, and Gaurav Kumar, ensured the smooth evacuation of patients, timely logistical coordination, and uninterrupted supply chains despite difficult terrain and time constraints.

At the ceremony, PGIMER Director Prof. Vivek Lal praised the team’s bravery and professionalism. “This team represented the finest spirit of PGIMER. Their presence at ground zero amidst extremely challenging circumstances not only saved lives but also brought dignity, relief, and a sense of hope to many in distress. Their contribution goes beyond medical duty—it was a deeply humanitarian act,” he said.
The event underscored the importance of teamwork, dedication, and the spirit of service in overcoming adversity and delivering critical aid to those in need.
