NEW DELHI – In a move that blends infrastructure development with ancient wellness traditions, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the launch of ‘Arogya Van,’ a specialized initiative to transform vacant highway land into thematic medicinal plant sanctuaries. Announced on April 8, the project aims to utilize over 188 hectares of roadside land to cultivate indigenous flora like Neem and Amla, creating “living repositories” of traditional knowledge while bolstering India’s ecological resilience and public health awareness.


A Prescription for Roadside Ecology

The ‘Arogya Van’ initiative marks a departure from standard roadside greening. While highway plantations have traditionally focused on “avenue trees” for shade and dust control, this project prioritizes 36 specific species known for their therapeutic properties and ecological value.

In its first phase, NHAI has identified 17 land parcels covering 62.8 hectares across 11 states, including Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. The plan involves planting approximately 67,462 medicinal trees, specifically selected to thrive in local agro-climatic zones.

“This is not just about greening; it’s about creating a functional ecosystem,” says the NHAI in its official release. By introducing species that support pollinators and microfauna, the initiative seeks to build “ecosystem resilience” against climate stressors.

The Selected “Highway Healers”

The identified species include:

  • Neem (Azadirachta indica): Renowned for its antimicrobial and air-purifying properties.

  • Amla (Phyllanthus emblica): A powerhouse of Vitamin C and antioxidants.

  • Jamun (Syzygium cumini): Valued for its role in managing blood sugar and supporting digestive health.

  • Bel (Aegle marmelos): Known for its gastrointestinal benefits and cultural significance.


Expert Insights: From Biodiversity to Mental Health

While the primary goal is ecological, health experts see a broader benefit. Dr. Ananya Sharma, a public health researcher (not involved in the NHAI project), notes that the proximity of these “micro-forests” to toll plazas and wayside amenities could have a subtle but significant impact on traveler well-being.

“Research into ‘biophilia’ suggests that even brief exposure to diverse green spaces can reduce cortisol—the stress hormone—in commuters,” says Dr. Sharma. “Furthermore, many of these species, like Neem, are efficient at filtering particulate matter (PM2.5) from vehicular emissions, potentially improving air quality in localized ‘hotspots’ like toll booths.”

The project also aligns with the Government of India’s broader push to promote Ayurveda and the National Ayush Mission. By placing these “Arogya Vans” near high-traffic areas, the NHAI intends to serve an educational purpose, turning highway stretches into open-air museums of Indian ethnobotany.

 


Strategic Implementation and Sustainability

The NHAI has identified a total of 188 hectares for the upcoming monsoon season to maximize sapling survival rates. Strategically, these plantations will be concentrated near:

 

  • Toll Plazas

  • Wayside Amenities

  • Interchanges and Cloverleaf Junctions

By focusing on these prominent locations, the agency hopes to maximize public outreach. The plantations will be managed under the Government of India’s strict landscaping and tree plantation guidelines to ensure long-term sustainability rather than just short-term aesthetic gains.

 

Potential Challenges and Limitations

Despite the benefits, ecological experts raise questions regarding the long-term maintenance of medicinal plants in high-pollution environments.

  • Pollutant Absorption: While trees filter air, heavy metals from exhaust can accumulate in the soil and plant tissues. Experts caution that while these are “living repositories” for awareness, the fruits or leaves grown directly beside high-traffic highways should generally not be harvested for consumption without rigorous heavy-metal testing.

  • Survival Rates: Roadside environments are harsh. Success will depend on the “agro-climatic suitability” mentioned in the NHAI action plan and consistent irrigation during the dry months.


The Road Ahead: Infrastructure as an Ecosystem

The ‘Arogya Van’ project reflects a growing global trend of “Green Infrastructure,” where civil engineering projects are expected to deliver environmental and social “co-benefits.”

For the average traveler, these corridors represent a shift in the driving experience—from a monotonous gray ribbon of asphalt to a vibrant green corridor that tells the story of India’s botanical heritage. For the environment, it is a much-needed boost to local biodiversity in areas often fragmented by development.

 

As the first 67,000 trees take root this monsoon, the NHAI is sending a clear message: the highways of the future must do more than just carry traffic—they must also carry the seeds of a healthier, more sustainable nation.
