NEW YORK — Global road traffic fatalities dropped by 21% between 2010 and 2025, offering a powerful signal that modern injury-prevention strategies are working. Yet, an update released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on July 20, 2026, reveals a stark global disparity: the decline remains deeply uneven across regions, and road traffic crashes continue to rank as the leading cause of death worldwide for children and young adults aged 5 to 29 years.

According to the WHO report, annual road traffic deaths dropped from approximately 1.26 million in 2010 to roughly 1.16 million in 2025. Remarkably, this downward trend occurred while the global motor vehicle fleet expanded by more than one billion vehicles over the same period.

Despite these broad gains, public health leaders caution that progress is far too slow to meet international targets, leaving low-income populations and vulnerable road users dangerously exposed.

  • Western Pacific Region: Achieved a 15% decline in deaths.

  • South-East Asia & The Americas: Experienced stagnant progress, seeing a marginal 2% decline and 0% change respectively.

  • African Region: Suffered a alarming 17% increase in road traffic deaths.

Low- and middle-income countries bear a staggering disproportionate burden, accounting for 92% of all road fatalities despite holding only about 60% of the world’s motor vehicles.

“This progress shows that change is possible when countries invest in safe road systems,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during the UN High-Level Meeting on Road Safety in New York. “However, all road deaths are preventable and none are acceptable. We must accelerate action to ensure more roads are designed for people first, not motor vehicles.”

Beyond the 1.16 million annual fatalities, between 20 million and 50 million people suffer non-fatal injuries each year, often resulting in permanent long-term disabilities and costing most countries up to 3% of their annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

More than half of all road deaths occur among vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists who lack the structural protection of a enclosed car.

However, personal risk-reduction strategies remain highly effective at protecting individuals and families day-to-day:

  1. Use Approved Helmets Correctly: Wearing a certified, properly fitted motorcycle helmet reduces the risk of death in a crash by more than six times.

  2. Buckle Up in Every Seat: Seat-belt usage reduces the risk of fatal injury for front-seat passengers by 45–50% and rear-seat passengers by up to 25%.

  3. Use Age-Appropriate Child Restraints: Ensure children under age 10 or under 4’9″ (145 cm) are secured in proper rear- or forward-facing car seats rather than standard lap belts.

  4. Eliminate Impairment and Mobile Distraction: Drivers using mobile phones are approximately 4 times more likely to crash than un-distracted drivers. Hands-free devices offer no significant safety advantage over hand-held phones due to cognitive distraction.

  5. Advocate for Local Infrastructure: Support community efforts to implement lower speed zones around schools, build sidewalk extensions, and add physical barriers between road lanes and bike paths.
