The partnership aims to develop sovereign, multilingual AI models specifically designed for the Indian clinical landscape. The immediate flagship of this collaboration is the scaling of Med-Sum (Medical Summary via AI Scribe). Originally developed by Amrita’s School of AI, the tool is now powered by BharatGen’s foundational models, including the recently released PARAM 2 (a 17-billion parameter model).

How It Works

Med-Sum acts as a digital assistant during doctor-patient consultations. It provides:

  • Real-time Transcription: Captures conversations in over 12 Indian languages.

  • Automated Summaries: Converts spoken dialogue into standardized clinical notes, such as SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan) notes.

  • Patient-Friendly Explanations: Generates post-visit summaries in the patient’s native tongue to improve treatment adherence.

For a physician in a crowded OPD, where the World Health Organization (WHO) notes there is only one doctor for every 1,445 citizens, documentation is often the biggest bottleneck. Preliminary data suggests that tools like Med-Sum can reduce documentation time by 40% to 50%, allowing doctors to spend more face-to-face time with patients.


Expert Insights: Beyond the Hype

While the technology is promising, medical experts emphasize the need for caution. Dr. Shyam Diwakar, Associate Professor at Amrita School of Biotechnology and head of its computational neuroscience lab, notes that while the efficiency gains are undeniable, the transition to AI must be handled with precision.

The broader implications for public health are vast, particularly for community health workers like ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers. By providing instant, voice-activated summaries, the AI can help these frontline workers track chronic conditions like diabetes or provide accurate maternal care follow-ups in remote villages.
