Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), a rare but treatable type of blood cancer, is on the rise among young adults aged 30 to 40 years in India, according to healthcare professionals. This trend marks a significant deviation from global patterns, where the average age of diagnosis is typically around 64 years.

CML is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of white blood cells, particularly granulocytes, in the bone marrow. Although it represents a relatively small percentage of leukemia cases—approximately 15%—it affects between 1.2 to 1.5 million people worldwide. In India, however, a recent study published in The Lancet highlights a concerning increase in younger patients being diagnosed with this condition.

“In my practice, I see about 5-10 new patients being diagnosed with CML every month, with an additional 10-15 patients coming in for follow-up,” stated Dr. K.S. Nataraj, Senior Haematologist and Haemato-Oncologist at HCG Comprehensive Cancer Care Hospital in Bengaluru. He attributes the rise in diagnoses to improved healthcare practices, including regular check-ups and more vigilant testing when abnormal white blood cell counts are detected.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing CML effectively. The disease is largely curable if caught in its early stages, but patients must adhere strictly to their treatment regimens. Common symptoms include night sweats, weight loss, fever, bone pain, and an enlarged spleen.

“CML is indeed a treatable form of blood cancer. However, achieving treatment success requires a delicate balance. Consistent medication intake and regular check-ups are important in this journey,” explained Dr. Tulika Seth, Professor of Haematology at AIIMS, New Delhi. She emphasized the importance of vigilant monitoring and personalized treatment strategies in managing the disease.

Living with CML poses unique challenges, and patients need to prioritize frequent monitoring and compliance with their treatment plans. “Prioritising frequent monitoring, compliance with treatment aiming for optimal treatment goals, and embracing advancements in therapy is key,” added Dr. Seth.

As the incidence of CML among young adults in India continues to rise, medical professionals stress the importance of awareness and early intervention. Through improved healthcare access and adherence to treatment, patients can manage the disease effectively and maintain a better quality of life.
