A groundbreaking study by Karolinska Institutet in Sweden has revealed a significant connection between vascular health and brain aging, with implications for dementia prevention. The research, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, highlights how conditions such as diabetes, stroke, and inflammation can accelerate brain aging, while a healthy lifestyle can slow this process and potentially reduce dementia risk.

The study, led by Anna Marseglia, employed artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze 739 MRI scans from cognitively healthy individuals. By estimating the “brain age” of participants, the researchers discovered that factors like diabetes and stroke were linked to older-appearing brains, suggesting faster cognitive decline. In contrast, individuals who engaged in regular physical activity and maintained healthy habits, including stable blood glucose levels, exhibited younger-looking brains.

Marseglia, the study’s lead author, emphasized the crucial role of vascular health in protecting the brain, urging the importance of managing blood sugar levels and other vascular risk factors. She noted that adopting a healthy lifestyle could serve as a powerful tool in preventing cognitive decline and dementia, especially as global dementia rates continue to rise.

The research adds weight to the growing understanding that maintaining vascular health not only benefits the heart and blood vessels but also plays a vital role in safeguarding cognitive function. The findings may complement emerging treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, offering a holistic approach to mitigating cognitive decline.
