LONDON — A comprehensive analysis of randomized clinical trials has provided definitive clarity on a long-standing medical debate, concluding that statins cause only a minor increase in muscle pain or weakness, while their established ability to prevent life-threatening heart attacks and strokes is substantially greater.
The landmark findings, published in The Lancet, examine data from tens of thousands of patients to address persistent public concerns about statin safety. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Researchers and independent cardiologists say these results explain why patients should not stop taking their cholesterol-lowering medication without consulting a doctor first.
Statins are widely prescribed medications designed to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol—frequently referred to as “bad” cholesterol. When LDL accumulates in the bloodstream, it forms fatty deposits called plaques along arterial walls.
