In a proactive move towards addressing the mental health challenges faced by medical students across the country, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has initiated an online survey through its newly constituted National Task Force. The task force, formed under the aegis of the Anti Ragging cell of NMC, aims to delve into the mental well-being of medical students and devise evidence-based strategies to mitigate stressors and enhance support systems.

Through a recent notice issued by the Apex Medical Commission, medical students and faculty members of medical colleges have been urged to participate in the survey by submitting their responses via a Google form link provided in the notice. The deadline for submissions has been set for 3rd May 2024.

The notice emphasizes the importance of this survey in comprehensively understanding the mental health landscape within medical colleges. “Anti Ragging cell in NMC has constituted a National Task Force on Mental Health and Wellbeing of Medical Students. Task Force has decided to conduct an online survey of medical students as well as the faculty in medical colleges,” stated the notice.

To ensure confidentiality, NMC has reassured participants that their identities will remain undisclosed and will only be utilized by the Task Force for analytical purposes. The Google form utilized for the survey further reiterated that individual responses will not be publicly shared, although participants will be required to submit personal details such as name, age, gender, email ID, and medical college affiliation.

The survey is structured to gather comprehensive insights into the diverse stressors faced by medical students across different academic levels. For MBBS students, details ranging from family environment and academic pressures to personal study habits and social relationships are being sought. Likewise, PG medical students are being queried about hostel facilities, academic workload, and interactions with faculty.

Moreover, faculty members and administrators are also encouraged to participate, providing insights into their observations and experiences regarding the mental well-being of students, along with suggestions for improvement.

The formation of the National Task Force underscores the gravity with which mental health issues among medical students are being approached. Comprising 15 members of the Apex Medical Commission, the task force is mandated to scrutinize existing data, identify contributing factors to mental health challenges, and propose evidence-based strategies to enhance mental well-being and prevent suicides among medical students.

NMC has set a deadline for the final report submission by 31st May 2024, with interim progress reports to be submitted monthly. Additionally, the task force may conduct on-site visits to colleges where incidents of mental health crises have been reported.

With this initiative, NMC aims to foster a supportive environment within medical colleges that prioritizes the mental health and well-being of students, faculty, and administrators alike. Through collaborative efforts and data-driven interventions, the medical community strives to cultivate a culture of resilience and holistic wellness among future healthcare professionals.
