Mental health struggles can feel like an endless battle against time, robbing individuals of precious moments and experiences. A nationwide survey, the GeneSight Mental Health Monitor, sheds light on the staggering impact of poor mental health, revealing that millions of Americans believe they’ve lost significant time due to mental illness.

Widespread Toll of Mental Illness

The survey paints a distressing picture, with 44% of Americans acknowledging the loss of significant time due to poor mental health. For those diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression, the burden is even heavier, with nearly 80% reporting similar experiences.

The toll extends beyond mere moments, as half of individuals battling anxiety and/or depression feel they’ve lost years of their lives to these challenges. Shockingly, 12% report losing entire decades, highlighting the profound and enduring consequences of mental health struggles.

Lost Time: Real Experiences, Missed Opportunities

The concept of “lost time” translates into a myriad of missed experiences, including major life events, special moments, and everyday joys. Over half of individuals with anxiety and/or depression report missing out on significant life events, while a staggering 71% feel mentally absent even when physically present at gatherings.

Moreover, nearly 8 in 10 people reveal that mental health has robbed them of simple pleasures, casting a shadow over hobbies, outings, and moments of relaxation.

Emotional Fallout: Exhaustion, Disorientation, and Disappointment

The aftermath of lost time to mental health is marked by profound emotional exhaustion, disorientation, and disappointment. For 60% of respondents, depressive episodes leave them utterly depleted, while half describe the end of a down period as disorienting.

Additionally, nearly half struggle with deep sadness and frustration over missed opportunities, underscoring the lingering disappointment that accompanies the realization of lost time.

Long Treatment Journeys, Hope for the Future

The journey to mental wellness is often prolonged, with one in three respondents feeling they’ve missed out on things due to ineffective treatments. The typical approach to psychiatric medication involves months or years of trial and error, compounding the struggle.

However, amidst the challenges, there is hope. Strategies to prioritize mental health include staying active, eating well, getting enough sleep, connecting with others, managing stress, avoiding substances, setting goals, and seeking professional help.
