Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh – A 25-year-old junior doctor was allegedly raped by a colleague in an abandoned hostel at Gajraraja Medical College in Gwalior, police said on Monday, January 6. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the medical community, occurred on Sunday, January 5, and the accused has since been apprehended.

According to City Superintendent of Police Ashok Jadon, the victim, who was preparing for an exam, was residing in the college’s girls’ hostel. The accused, a fellow junior doctor and acquaintance of the victim, invited her to meet him at the old boys’ hostel, which is now abandoned. When she arrived, the accused allegedly threatened and raped her.

The victim reported the assault to the Kampu police station, following which the accused was arrested and charged under relevant legal provisions. “The case is being investigated thoroughly, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure justice for the victim,” said Jadon.

This incident comes just months after the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor in Kolkata in August 2024, a case that sparked nationwide outrage and highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by medical professionals.

Medical colleges and institutions across the country are increasingly under scrutiny for the safety and well-being of their students and staff. Following the Gwalior incident, students and faculty at Gajraraja Medical College have demanded stricter security measures and better surveillance of campus facilities to prevent such heinous crimes.

“It is horrifying to think that such incidents can occur in a place where students come to pursue their dreams. The authorities must ensure that hostels and other campus facilities are safe and secure for everyone,” said a senior student, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Gwalior police have assured the public that they are taking the case seriously and have pledged to investigate any lapses in campus security. Meanwhile, support groups and counselors have been mobilized to assist the victim and other students who may be distressed by the incident.

The medical community and activists across the country are calling for systemic changes to address issues of safety and gender-based violence, particularly in educational institutions. As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for stricter safeguards to protect students and professionals from such crimes.
