Accra, July 3 — In a landmark development, India has announced a major initiative to provide affordable and reliable healthcare to Ghana through the establishment of Jan Aushadhi Kendras. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a joint press conference with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, marking a significant step in bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which have played a transformative role in making essential medicines accessible at low cost across India, are set to be introduced in Ghana to help address healthcare affordability and reliability for its citizens. “Through the Jan Aushadhi Kendra, India proposes to provide Ghana’s citizens with affordable healthcare, reliable care,” Prime Minister Modi stated, emphasizing the shared commitment to public health.

Beyond healthcare, the leaders discussed collaboration in vaccine production, aiming to strengthen both countries’ capacities in public health and pandemic preparedness. The talks also covered expanding cooperation in sectors such as FinTech, skill development, agriculture, defence, maritime security, and energy. India announced plans to double ITEC and ICCR scholarships for Ghanaian students and to establish a Skill Development Centre to support youth vocational training.

The bilateral relationship was formally elevated to a “Comprehensive Partnership,” reflecting a shared vision for sustainable development, democratic values, and deeper economic and cultural ties. President Mahama welcomed the Indian Prime Minister, highlighting the historical and growing bonds between the two countries.

In recognition of his efforts to strengthen India-Ghana relations and amplify the voice of the Global South, Prime Minister Modi was conferred the “Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana,” the nation’s highest civilian honor.
