In a landmark initiative to strengthen its healthcare system, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a sweeping overhaul of medical services across its six government medical colleges. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the reforms focus on establishing new specialist departments, modernizing diagnostic infrastructure, and recruiting additional medical professionals to reduce patient reliance on out-of-state facilities.
Specialist Departments to Address Local Needs
A key highlight of the overhaul is the establishment of Nephrology, Neurology, and Gastroenterology departments at Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur. The state has sanctioned 118 new posts to support these departments, aiming to provide advanced care for kidney, neurological, and digestive ailments to residents of Hamirpur and neighboring districts such as Mandi, Una, Bilaspur, and Kangra. Currently, many patients are forced to travel to IGMC Shimla, Dr. RPGMC Tanda, or PGIMER Chandigarh due to the lack of local specialists.
A recent survey conducted under the Chief Minister’s directive revealed a significant increase in such cases, prompting expedited action from the Health Department. The government has instructed hospital authorities to fast-track the setup of these departments and ensure timely recruitment of doctors and support staff.
Expansion and Modernization Across Medical Colleges
The reforms extend beyond Hamirpur. Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Medical College in Nerchowk, Mandi district, will soon house a new Department of Nuclear Medicine, with positions created for professors, technologists, and a Radiation Safety Officer. Dr. Y.S. Parmar Government Medical College in Nahan, Sirmaur, will see the appointment of an Assistant Professor in Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion.
To further enhance diagnostic capabilities, the government is installing advanced three Tesla MRI machines in the medical colleges of Hamirpur, Nerchowk, and Tanda. The aging MRI at IGMC Shimla, over 19 years old, will also be replaced. A total of Rs 200 crore has been allocated to modernize medical equipment and upgrade 69 health facilities across the state, including Chamiyana Hospital in Shimla.
Broader Healthcare Reforms and Infrastructure Upgrades
These efforts are part of a broader vision to modernize Himachal Pradesh’s healthcare infrastructure. The government is also upgrading secondary care, emergency services, and facility safety measures in hospitals statewide. Modular operation theatres and in-house laboratories are being established to improve diagnostic and treatment facilities at zonal, regional, and district hospitals.
Additionally, the state has implemented workforce reforms, including the separation of cadres within the Directorate of Medical Education and the Directorate of Health Services, to streamline recruitment and improve operational efficiency. This is expected to enhance service delivery, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Government Commitment and Future Outlook
Chief Minister Sukhu has reiterated the government’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare at citizens’ doorsteps and reducing the migration of patients to other states for treatment. The reforms are also expected to boost medical tourism and create new employment opportunities for healthcare professionals.
“This reform is a step forward in ensuring efficient medical service delivery across the state. By streamlining recruitment and administration, we aim to provide high-quality healthcare services to all citizens,” said a spokesperson from the Health Department.
