Ernakulam, Kerala – A school in Ernakulam district has been temporarily closed for a week after several students exhibited symptoms suggestive of meningitis, prompting health officials to take precautionary measures.

According to reports, students from St. Paul’s International School in Kalamassery, particularly those in the first and second grades, began showing symptoms including fever, headaches, irritability, and vomiting. In response, district health authorities recommended the school’s immediate closure to prevent potential spread.

“We are taking this situation very seriously,” stated a district health official. “Samples from the affected children have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Alappuzha for testing. We are awaiting the results to confirm the diagnosis.”

Reports also indicate that several of the affected students were admitted to private hospitals in the area, with some receiving intensive care. Health officials have stated that the students conditions are currently stable.

As a further precaution, the district health authorities have recommended postponing the upcoming examinations for the first and second grade students.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and can be caused by viral or bacterial infections. It is important to note that until the test results are returned, the cases are still only suspected of being meningitis.

Health officials are also emphasizing the importance of hygiene and vigilance, and asking parents to monitor their children for any symptoms.
