DELHI — In an effort to strengthen public health infrastructure, preserve biodiversity, and bolster agrarian livelihoods, the Indian Ministry of Ayush has released a comprehensive progress report detailing multi-million rupee investments into the national medicinal plant sector.
According to official disclosures presented to the Rajya Sabha on July 21, 2026, by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, the government is executing a multi-pronged strategy through the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB). The initiatives focus on conserving wild flora, establishing rigid supply chain standards, and incentivizing local farmers to cultivate essential botanical species.
This public health and agricultural push comes at a time when global demand for botanical therapeutics, natural health products, and traditional medicine systems (such as Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha) is reaching unprecedented levels.
The Strategy: Conservation, Cultivation, and Quality Assurance
The cornerstone of this initiative is the Central Sector Scheme on “Conservation, Development, and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants.” Designed to span wild forests and agricultural fields, the policy bridges ecological preservation with modern supply-chain management.

1. In-Situ and Ex-Situ Conservation
Wild habitats are vulnerable to over-harvesting. To mitigate ecological degradation while protecting plant genetics, the NMPB has funded 15 major forest-conservation projects over the last five years, allocating ₹3,363.24 lakhs ($4.0M USD equivalent). These funds support:

To bridge the gap between traditional foraging and pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing, the NMPB operates Regional-cum-Facilitation Centres (RCFCs) across the country. These centers distribute Quality Planting Material (QPM) to agriculturalists while training growers in Good Agriculture Practices (GAPs) and Good Field Collection Practices (GFCPs).
Between FY 2021–22 and FY 2025–26, the NMPB approved 152 educational projects—spanning workshops, farmer seminars, and training modules—backed by an approved outlay of ₹1,186.91 lakhs.
3. Supply Chain Integration and Direct Subsidies
Recognizing that agricultural production fails without processing infrastructure, the NMPB supported 12 supply-chain integration projects between 2023 and 2026 across states like Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, short-duration medicinal crops are being subsidized under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).
