Madrid, Spain – A new study suggests that serious video games, when used in conjunction with traditional medication, may offer a beneficial approach to managing some symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
The research, published in the journal JMIR Serious Games, involved 76 children and adolescents with ADHD who participated in a 20-session program using the “The Secret Trail of Moon” (MOON) video game. This game incorporates personalized cognitive training designed to enhance emotional regulation.
- Inhibition: The ability to control impulses and resist distractions.
- Working Memory: The capacity to hold and manipulate information in the mind.
- Material Organization: The skill of effectively organizing and managing tasks and belongings.
“Serious video games combined with multimodal treatment can improve symptoms associated with ADHD,” concluded the study authors.
The findings suggest that incorporating interactive and engaging video game-based therapies could potentially complement traditional medication and psychotherapy in the management of ADHD.
