In recent years, cases of fatty liver have surged, propelled by sedentary lifestyles and escalating social drinking habits, according to medical experts. With approximately one in every five individuals now diagnosed with this condition, doctors are sounding the alarm on the urgent need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to combat this burgeoning health crisis.

As the world observes World Liver Day on Friday, health practitioners emphasize the critical role of the liver in detoxification, nutrient processing, and metabolism. Yet, the rising prevalence of fatty liver across diverse age groups underscores the pervasive impact of lifestyle choices on liver health.

Once considered a benign finding, fatty liver now serves as a potent indicator of underlying health risks, including diabetes, cholesterol-related issues, and cardiovascular ailments. Moreover, its potential progression to more severe complications such as steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer underscores the imperative of proactive intervention and lifestyle modification.

Addressing the root causes of fatty liver necessitates a multifaceted approach encompassing lifestyle modifications and dietary adjustments. Combatting prolonged sedentary behavior by incorporating regular physical activity, such as short breaks for walking, is paramount in mitigating the risk of fatty liver development.

Equally crucial is the adoption of a balanced diet rich in vegetables, pulses, lean proteins, and essential fats, while minimizing the consumption of fried foods and processed sugars, doctors advise.

Dr. Sachin Daga, Senior Consultant Hepatobiliary Pancreas & Liver Transplant Surgeon at KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, highlights the potential benefits of intermittent fasting coupled with daily walking for weight loss and liver health. “Fasting boosts fat metabolism, curbs caloric intake, enhances insulin sensitivity, and improves heart rate variability and lipid metabolism,” Dr. Daga explains.

Dr. Raja Prasad P., Senior Consultant at Amor Hospitals, underscores the importance of embracing a balanced diet and regular exercise to maintain liver health, while emphasizing the need for hepatitis B vaccination and routine check-ups.

Dr. Chalapathi Rao Achanta, Clinical Director and Chief of Department (Gastroenterology) at KIMS ICON – Vizag, stresses the significance of regular screening for early detection and intervention against liver diseases, particularly among individuals with obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

As the global burden of fatty liver continues to escalate, prioritizing preventive measures and adopting healthier lifestyle choices are paramount in safeguarding liver health and mitigating the risk of associated complications. Through collective efforts and individual action, the world can take significant strides towards combating the growing prevalence of fatty liver and promoting overall well-being.
