On the International Day of Yoga (IDY), observed annually on June 21, experts highlighted the significant benefits yoga offers women in managing stress, anxiety, and mood swings. The United Nations adopted this day in 2014 following an initiative by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Yoga, a practice that encompasses physical postures, mindful breathing, and meditation, promotes overall physical fitness by enhancing flexibility, strength, and balance. These benefits contribute to a woman’s general well-being and play a crucial role in cardiovascular health and weight management.
Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, Founder and Director of Manasthali Wellness, emphasized yoga’s mental health benefits. “Beyond the physical advantages, yoga cultivates mental clarity and emotional stability,” Dr. Kapoor noted. “Mindful breathing and meditation practices integral to yoga can significantly alleviate stress and anxiety.”
This year’s IDY theme, ‘Yoga for Self and Society,’ underscores yoga’s dual role in promoting individual well-being and fostering societal harmony. The theme reflects the growing recognition of yoga as a tool for personal and communal development.
Emerging research also supports yoga’s effectiveness in addressing neurological issues. Dr. Rajnish Kumar, Senior Director and Unit Head of Neurology at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Dwarka, explained that yoga encourages neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize itself. “This can aid in recovery from neurological disorders and enhance cognitive function,” Dr. Kumar said. “Furthermore, yoga’s physical postures and relaxation techniques can reduce chronic pain by improving flexibility, strength, and pain perception.”
For women experiencing menstrual discomfort, managing conditions like PCOS or menopause symptoms, or seeking greater vitality, regular yoga practice offers a holistic approach to health. This approach nourishes both body and spirit, providing relief from various physical and emotional challenges.
The experts’ insights shared on the International Day of Yoga reinforce yoga’s value as a multifaceted tool for women’s health, addressing both immediate physical needs and long-term mental well-being. As more women incorporate yoga into their routines, the positive impact on individual lives and broader society becomes increasingly evident.
