A new meta-analysis examining long-term survival after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) reveals that while men and women have similar survival rates in the first decade after surgery, women tend to live longer than men beyond the 10-year mark. The study, which reviewed data from more than 140,000 patients across eight studies, found that both sexes continue to face higher mortality rates than the general population.

The research team analyzed all-cause mortality in CABG patients and non-CABG patients using data from MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and the Cochrane Library. They employed the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards regression modeling to compare long-term outcomes between groups. Over a 19-year period, both men and women who underwent CABG were more likely to die of any cause than the general population. The hazard ratio (HR) for men was 1.14 (95% CI, 1.05–1.23; P = .002), and for women, it was 1.21 (95% CI, 1.01–1.47; P = .045).

Despite this increased risk, the analysis showed that men and women who had CABG do not differ significantly in life expectancy compared to the general population in the first 10 years after surgery. However, after the first decade, women demonstrated slightly better survival outcomes than men.
