Recent studies indicate that women require more sleep than men, shedding light on the importance of adequate rest for overall health and well-being. On average, women need about 11 minutes more sleep per night compared to men. While this difference may seem minor, it carries significant implications for health and daily functioning.

The Sleep Foundation suggests that hormonal fluctuations are a key reason behind women’s increased sleep needs. Throughout their lives, women experience various hormonal changes—from menstruation to pregnancy and menopause—that can disrupt sleep patterns. Additionally, women are 40% more likely than men to suffer from insomnia.

“Women’s hormones play a significant role in their sleep patterns,” says Dr. Aileen Alexander, a women’s health and sleep expert, in an interview with Glamour magazine. “This means women often need more sleep and are more prone to daytime naps.”

Beyond biological factors, societal expectations and responsibilities also contribute to women’s sleep requirements. Research highlights that women often bear the majority of household and caregiving duties, which leads to increased fatigue and stress. “Women are typically the ones who get up through the night to support children or, in some cases, elderly parents,” Alexander explains. These additional pressures necessitate more sleep for recovery and maintaining optimal cognitive function.

Individual sleep needs, however, can vary widely based on factors such as age, lifestyle, and overall health, regardless of gender.

“While more research is needed to fully understand the gender differences in sleep requirements and cycles, the consequences of insufficient sleep are well-documented and affect both men and women significantly,” Alexander adds.

Experts recommend that adults aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night. If you find yourself consistently lacking adequate rest, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. Prioritizing sleep is essential for maintaining good health, cognitive function, and overall quality of life.
