Malappuram, Kerala: A 35-year-old woman, identified as Asma, tragically passed away during childbirth at her rented home in Chattiparamba on Sunday morning. This was her fifth delivery, and the circumstances surrounding her death have prompted a police investigation.
According to reports, Asma’s husband, Sirajudheen, opted for a home birth using acupuncture methods instead of seeking medical assistance. Despite Asma reportedly pleading to be taken to a hospital due to severe labor pains, her husband allegedly refused. She gave birth around 6 PM on Saturday, but it was only around 9 PM that her husband realized she had passed away. The newborn is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Perumbavoor.
Following the incident, Sirajudheen transported Asma’s body to his residence in Perumbavoor, Ernakulam district. Upon being alerted, the Perumbavoor police shifted the body to the Taluk Hospital for further procedures. The Malappuram police are leading the investigation into the case, with statements from relatives and neighbors being recorded.
Local sources revealed that Asma’s first two deliveries had taken place in hospitals, but the last three occurred at home. Neighbors were reportedly unaware of the family’s circumstances, including the presence of four other children.
Concerns Over Home Birth Practices
This incident has reignited concerns over home births in Malappuram district, where traditional practices and beliefs often lead families to avoid hospital deliveries. Health officials have been raising awareness about the risks associated with home births, but such incidents continue to occur. Experts have pointed out that complications like excessive bleeding or improper handling of delivery can prove fatal without timely medical intervention.
Post-Mortem and Legal Proceedings
The post-mortem examination is scheduled for Monday to determine the exact cause of death. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are probing whether negligence or superstitious practices contributed to the tragedy.
