Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a critical appeal for US$ 1.5 billion to address 41 emergencies worldwide and safeguard the health of vulnerable populations in 2024. This comprehensive appeal aims to provide life-saving health care, distribute crucial health supplies, and maintain essential health services for over 87 million people facing crises spanning conflict, climate change, and economic instability.

The emergencies covered in the appeal reflect the pressing need for a robust response from WHO in the face of complex challenges that contribute to displacement, hunger, and inequality. The funding will support initiatives ranging from aiding mothers giving birth in conflict zones to providing assistance to young children in drought-affected regions and ensuring continued access to cancer treatment and dialysis.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, emphasized the vital role of health care in emergencies, stating, “For those facing emergencies, disruptions to essential health services often mean the difference between life and death.” He highlighted the importance of health-care services in breaking the cycle of crises that often leaves communities in precarious conditions, necessitating ongoing emergency assistance.

The appeal emphasizes the positive impact of funding in supporting people with humanitarian needs. According to WHO, every US$ 1 invested in the organization delivers a remarkable return on investment of at least US$ 35.

The proposed funding allocation spans WHO’s regional divisions, with the African Region receiving US$ 334 million, the Eastern Mediterranean Region allocated US$ 705 million, the European Region earmarked for US$ 183 million, the Western Pacific Region allocated US$ 15.2 million, the South-East Asia Region receiving US$ 49 million, and the Americas Region benefiting from US$ 131 million.

Dr. Tedros expressed gratitude for the support received in 2023, which enabled WHO to assist millions of people in crisis. As the world enters 2024, the organization emphasizes the critical need for solidarity and support from the international community to address the escalating challenges and ensure the well-being of those in the most vulnerable situations.
