Midnapore, West Bengal – The West Bengal Health Department has suspended postgraduate trainee doctors from performing surgeries at Midnapore Medical College following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and left three others critically ill due to the administration of expired saline.
On Tuesday, the health department took immediate action after the saline, which was found to be expired, was administered to patients. The pregnant woman, who was among those affected, succumbed to her condition, while three other patients were left in a critical state. Authorities cited negligence by the postgraduate trainees as the cause of the incident.
In an official statement, the health department directed that surgeries at the facility would henceforth be performed solely by qualified medical professionals holding MD/MS degrees. Postgraduate trainees, who were previously involved in surgical procedures, are now barred from participating in such activities until further notice.
The family of the deceased woman has filed a police complaint, demanding accountability from the hospital authorities. The case has drawn widespread public attention, with concerns over the quality of healthcare in the state intensifying.
Meanwhile, BJP Member of Parliament Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato criticized the state’s healthcare system and called for immediate intervention from the central government. He has also urged for a CBI investigation into the supply of expired saline, alleging systemic issues that compromise the safety of patients in West Bengal’s medical institutions.
This incident has raised serious questions about the quality control and oversight in the state’s healthcare facilities, prompting calls for reform and stricter measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
