In response to rising concerns about overweight and obesity across the country, the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) has issued an urgent advisory to all states and Union Territories, highlighting the health risks associated with high consumption of edible oils. The advisory comes in the wake of the latest findings from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), which reveal that one in five adults in urban India is now classified as overweight or obese.

Rising Obesity and Health Risks

Recent data paints a concerning picture:

  • NFHS-5 findings: 20% of adults in urban India are overweight or obese.

  • Poshan Tracker data (May 2025): 6% of children under five at Anganwadi Centres are classified as overweight or obese.

Health officials attribute these trends to a combination of unhealthy diets, excessive intake of edible oils, reduced physical activity, and overall lifestyle changes. The ministry warned that such lifestyles significantly increase the risk of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain cancers.

Key Directives from the Advisory

The WCD Ministry’s advisory includes several important directives for state governments and public health officials:

  • Focus on reducing edible oil consumption: States have been urged to promote a reduction in daily edible oil intake in line with the revised Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024, by the National Institute of Nutrition.

  • Awareness campaigns: All state-level, district, and community offices are instructed to conduct targeted educational activities. These will be aimed at officers, grassroots Anganwadi workers, and the community to promote healthier dietary practices.

  • Supplementary nutrition caution: The advisory also reiterates previous guidance to strictly monitor the use of added sugar, salt, synthetic colors, and preservatives in supplementary nutrition provided through Anganwadis and related government programs.

Support for National Health Initiatives

The ministry’s actions reinforce the objectives of the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. By increasing public awareness and encouraging dietary shifts, officials hope to stem the tide of lifestyle diseases linked to poor eating habits and inactivity.
