West Bengal, August 20, 2025 – In an unexpected move, the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC) has announced the temporary suspension of the NEET UG 2025 counselling process for MBBS and BDS admissions across the state. The decision, delivered via an urgent notice just two days ahead of the highly anticipated round 1 seat allotment results, has cast uncertainty over the futures of more than 11,000 medical aspirants.

The suspension, revealed on Monday, cites that “West Bengal NEET UG Medical Dental 2025 counselling/admission has been kept in abeyance till further orders.” This abrupt halt follows the release of a revised provisional merit list for the crucial 85% state quota seats on August 16. Consequently, a total of 11,178 candidates named in the merit list now face an indefinite wait for clarity on their academic futures.

The development has sparked widespread concern and criticism from both students and parents. Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar, has publicly condemned the state’s decision, calling it an act that has “pushed the future of the state’s medical students into darkness.” In a strongly worded statement, Majumdar questioned the timing of the suspension, raising concerns about possible political motives and the transparency of the process.

Aspirants and their families continue to await further updates from WBMCC, as the state’s medical college admission process stands frozen for the time being.
