New Delhi, Jul 24:
A major new international study suggests that taking just 7,000 steps a day may dramatically reduce the risk of death and prevent a range of serious health conditions, including dementia and depression.

Key Findings

Researchers analyzed data from 88 studies published between 2014 and 2025, covering over 160,000 adults worldwide. The results show significant health benefits for those consistently walking 7,000 steps daily compared to those taking just 2,000 steps:

  • 47% lower risk of death from any cause

  • 38% reduced risk of developing dementia

  • 22% lower risk of depression

  • 6% reduced chance of developing cancer

  • 25% lower risk of heart disease

  • 14% reduced risk of type 2 diabetes

  • 28% lower chance of experiencing a fall

The team, which included researchers from the University of Sydney and institutes across Australia, the UK, Spain, and Norway, believes these findings offer a more accessible alternative to the commonly cited goal of 10,000 steps per day. By setting the target at 7,000 steps, less active individuals and older adults may be more likely to achieve meaningful health gains1.

Study Details

  • Scope: First comprehensive assessment of daily steps and prevention across multiple health conditions.

  • Participants: 1.6 lakh (160,000) adults from diverse global populations.

  • Publication: The Lancet Public Health.

Points of Caution

Researchers noted that while results for death risk, heart disease, diabetes, and depression are relatively strong, the evidence linking step counts to lower rates of dementia and cancer is based on fewer studies, making the certainty for these outcomes lower. Additionally, factors such as participant age and frailty were not always considered, which could affect the findings.

“Compared with 2,000 steps per day, 7,000 steps per day was associated with a 47 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality, a 25 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease incidence, a 47 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality, a non-significant six per cent lower risk of cancer incidence, a 37 per cent lower risk of cancer mortality, a 14 per cent lower risk of type 2 diabetes, a 38 per cent lower risk of dementia, a 22 per cent lower risk of depressive symptoms, and a 28 per cent lower risk of falls,” the research team reported.

Conclusion

This landmark study reinforces the idea that moderate increases in daily physical activity can bring substantial health benefits and potentially extend life.

Disclaimer

The findings outlined in this article are based on a large-scale analysis but do not constitute personal medical advice. The study authors caution that evidence for some conditions, especially cancer and dementia, is less certain due to limited data. Individual health needs can vary, so readers are urged to consult with medical professionals before making significant changes to their physical activity routines.
