The Uttar Pradesh Medical Council (UPMC) has officially cancelled the ongoing Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) counselling process for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) following sustained student protests and high-level interventions. The decision was announced on social media by the All FMGs Association on June 18, after discussions with the National Medical Commission (NMC) and a meeting with Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.
The move comes in response to mounting pressure from FMG students, many of whom were left without internship seats after only 781 spots were allocated this year—significantly fewer than the 1,161 seats provided in 2024. Reports indicate that over 500 students with UP domicile remain unplaced, prompting demands for increased seat allocation or a second round of counselling to address the shortfall.
In their statement, the All FMGs Association urged the State Medical Council to expedite necessary procedures and ensure an adequate number of seats so that FMGs can begin their internships without further delay, ideally before July. The association highlighted the urgency, noting that delays could jeopardize eligibility for upcoming NEET-PG 2026 examinations and disrupt the professional trajectories of affected graduates.
With the counselling process now cancelled, students remain hopeful that revised allotments will be made soon, ensuring fair and timely internship opportunities for all eligible FMGs.
