Chia seeds, widely celebrated for their nutritional benefits, have become a staple in health-conscious diets around the world. However, a recent warning from a US-based doctor has brought attention to potential health risks associated with the improper consumption of these tiny seeds.

The Warning

According to Dr. Rebecca Rawl, a gastroenterologist, consuming dry chia seeds without soaking them first can lead to serious medical complications. Dr. Rawl shared a case where a patient experienced severe difficulty swallowing after eating a spoonful of dry chia seeds followed by a glass of water. The seeds, which are highly absorbent, expanded in the patient’s esophagus, causing a blockage that required emergency medical intervention.

Why Chia Seeds Can Be Risky

Chia seeds can absorb up to 27 times their weight in water. When consumed dry, they can swell rapidly upon contact with fluids in the digestive tract. This expansion can potentially cause blockages, particularly for individuals with existing swallowing difficulties or anatomical abnormalities in the esophagus.

Safe Ways to Consume Chia Seeds

Health experts recommend always soaking chia seeds in water, milk, or other liquids for at least 10-15 minutes before consumption. This allows the seeds to expand fully and develop a gel-like consistency, making them easier to digest and reducing the risk of choking or blockage.

Nutritional Benefits Remain

Despite these warnings, chia seeds remain a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and various micronutrients. When consumed responsibly, they can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet.
