Lucknow, March 13, 2024 (Health News): As cases of glaucoma continue to rise, ophthalmology experts are sounding the alarm on the importance of early detection and treatment to prevent irreversible vision loss. Glaucoma, often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” poses a significant risk to individuals with a family history, those over 40 years old, and those experiencing specific symptoms such as eye pain, pressure, headaches, or seeing rainbow-colored halos around lights.
According to Siddharth Agrawal, faculty member at the ophthalmology department of King George’s Medical University (KGMU), glaucoma results from a buildup of fluid inside the eye, leading to increased pressure that can damage the optic nerve. He stressed the critical importance of regular eye checkups, particularly for individuals over 40, and advised heightened vigilance for those with a family history of glaucoma or experiencing discomfort in their eyes.
Agrawal’s colleague, S. K. Bhaskar, another faculty member at KGMU’s ophthalmology department, reiterated the significance of proper fluid drainage within the eye to maintain healthy pressure levels. He warned against excessive steroid use, which can exacerbate eye problems and contribute to the development of glaucoma.
Bhaskar highlighted the growing awareness of glaucoma, with a 10% increase in diagnosed cases over the past five years. However, he cautioned that many individuals mistake glaucoma for cataracts, leading to delays in treatment. Unlike cataracts, glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss if left untreated.
Emphasizing the importance of early detection, Bhaskar stressed the need for eye pressure and retinal tests for anyone over 40 experiencing vision issues. Detecting glaucoma early allows for timely intervention, reducing the risk of vision loss and preserving overall eye health.
As awareness of glaucoma continues to grow, experts urge individuals to prioritize regular eye examinations, especially if they fall into high-risk categories or experience symptoms associated with the condition. Ignoring signs of glaucoma could have severe consequences, underscoring the importance of proactive eye care and preventive measures.
