June 3, 2025 – Australia:
The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has issued an urgent appeal for O-type blood donors, as the nation’s supplies of both O positive and O negative blood reach their lowest levels since October 2023. The organisation is seeking an additional 9,500 donations over the next seven days to meet the ongoing demand from hospitals across the country.

Critical Shortage Amid High Cancellation Rates

According to Stuart Chesneau, Lifeblood’s Executive Director, the current shortage is being driven by a spike in appointment cancellations and rescheduling—the highest rates seen since June last year. “Every day, we issue close to 10,000 blood transfusions and medications to hospitals around the country to meet patient demand, and we can’t do it without people donating,” Chesneau said.

Why O-Type Blood Is Vital

O positive and O negative blood types are the most frequently requested by hospitals, especially in emergencies. O negative, known as the “universal blood type,” is invaluable in trauma situations when a patient’s blood type is unknown. It is routinely stocked in ambulances and rescue helicopters for immediate use.

Despite its importance, only about 7% of Australians have O negative blood, making it rare. Yet, it accounts for 16% of hospital orders due to its universal compatibility. O positive, while more common (found in 40% of Australians), is equally crucial for emergency transfusions.

How You Can Help

Lifeblood is urging all eligible Australians—especially those with O-type blood—to book a donation appointment as soon as possible. Even those who have never donated before are encouraged to participate; donating is also an opportunity to learn your blood type.

A typical blood donation appointment takes about an hour, with the actual donation lasting up to 10 minutes. “An hour of your time might give someone the rest of their life. Plus, you’ll give Lifeblood’s blood supplies a much-needed boost as we head into the winter months,” Chesneau added.
