Despite mounting efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a staggering 5 million deaths are attributed to this global health crisis each year, underscoring the urgent need for concerted action on a global scale. The 2024 AMR Preparedness Index Progress Report, released by the Global Coalition on Aging (GCOA) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), has sounded the alarm, urging leaders to ramp up efforts to address this pressing threat.

The report, which assesses the progress of the 11 largest global economies in combating AMR, reveals that while some strides have been made, more decisive action is needed to mitigate the devastating health and financial consequences of antimicrobial resistance.

“AMR poses a significant barrier to public health and health system sustainability, with profound implications for healthy aging,” the report emphasizes. “Without urgent intervention, the global economy could face a staggering annual cost of up to $3.4 trillion by 2023, according to estimates by the World Bank.”

Examining over 100 metrics, the 2024 AMR Preparedness Index evaluates countries’ performance against AMR and sets benchmarks for policy action and leadership. Despite the gravity of the situation, the report highlights promising progress in several areas, with the UK maintaining its position as a global leader in the fight against AMR.

However, the report also underscores the need for greater investment and targeted action, particularly in revitalizing the dwindling pipeline of novel antibiotics. Michael Hodin, CEO of GCOA, stresses the imperative for swift and decisive action: “AMR is no longer a distant threat — it is already upon us. Global leaders must unite to commit and implement concrete actions to address this growing crisis. Failure to act risks not only the loss of vital antibiotics but also our ability to enjoy the longevity we currently experience.”

The call for action comes at a critical juncture, as the world grapples with the ongoing challenges posed by AMR. It is imperative that policymakers, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders across sectors collaborate to develop and implement comprehensive strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance and safeguard public health for generations to come.
