In a determined effort to eradicate Lymphatic Filariasis, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, spearheaded the inauguration of the Bi-annual Nationwide Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign. This initiative aims to halt disease transmission by administering free preventive medications to residents in affected areas.
The campaign, spanning over two weeks, will encompass 92 districts across 11 states. Chhattisgarh Health Minister, Sh. Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, joined the event alongside other dignitaries. Emphasizing India’s commitment to eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis by 2027, three years ahead of the global target, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel praised the nation’s resilience against deadly diseases under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Health Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of healthcare professionals in the battle against the disease, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel highlighted the importance of achieving more than 95% coverage of the eligible population this year. He stressed the need for a mission-mode approach, calling for social mobilization and active community participation to transform the campaign into a “people’s movement.”
Sh. Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, Chhattisgarh Health Minister, commended the concerted efforts of the government despite logistical challenges, reaffirming the commitment to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis through intensive awareness campaigns.
Background:
Lymphatic Filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, is a priority disease slated for elimination by 2027. India has implemented various strategies, including the recently launched five-pronged approach by Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya. This approach aims to accelerate progress towards eliminating the disease by 2027.
The campaign involves 11 endemic states and targets 345 districts across the country. Despite challenges, such as tough terrains and transportation issues, the government remains steadfast in its efforts to combat Lymphatic Filariasis through comprehensive initiatives.
Senior officials from the Union Health Ministry, implementing states, and representatives from implementing agencies attended the launch, demonstrating a unified commitment towards achieving the goal of a filaria-free India.
