New Delhi, Apr 23: Underscoring the vital importance of fire prevention within healthcare environments, the Union Health Ministry launched ‘Fire Safety Week’ on Tuesday, reaffirming its dedication to protecting patients, visitors, and staff in medical facilities throughout India. The awareness week runs from April 21st to 25th.
Speaking at the launch event, which included a pledge-taking ceremony, Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava emphasized the critical need for strong fire and electrical safety measures across all hospitals, whether public or private. “We must foster a culture of safety and preparedness within healthcare institutions, including regular mock drills and capacity-building exercises,” she stated.
The Ministry has partnered with all states, Union Territories, and relevant central government departments to observe the week-long campaign. The initiative aims to significantly enhance awareness about fire hazards in healthcare settings and promote effective prevention strategies.
Secretary Srivastava called upon all stakeholders, specifically including private hospitals and professional bodies like the Indian Medical Association (IMA), to engage actively in the campaign and share successful safety practices with the Ministry.
During the launch, participants took a pledge to uphold the highest standards of fire safety. This commitment includes conducting regular training on fire prevention techniques and emergency protocols, as well as exploring innovative methods to further reduce fire risks in hospitals.
To support the campaign’s objectives, a two-day national webinar series was organized, attracting over 3,000 participants from various parts of India. The webinars covered essential topics such as advanced fire detection systems, efficient evacuation procedures, adherence to regulatory standards, and the importance of regular system maintenance.
The Health Ministry reiterated that a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors is crucial to safeguarding lives and ensuring that hospitals are thoroughly prepared to manage any fire-related emergencies effectively.
