New Delhi, August 18, 2024 — The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of healthcare professionals across the country. This assurance was provided during a crucial meeting held in New Delhi, where representatives from the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), the Indian Medical Association (IMA), and Resident Doctors’ Associations from various governmental medical colleges and hospitals in Delhi convened with senior officials from the Ministry.
The meeting was called in the wake of a concerning incident involving an assault on a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, which has sparked widespread unrest among the medical community. During the discussion, the representatives expressed their grave concerns regarding the increasing threats to healthcare workers’ safety at their workplaces.
The Union Health Ministry acknowledged the urgency of the situation and reiterated its commitment to the well-being of healthcare professionals. Officials informed the representatives that the Government is fully aware of the challenges faced by medical personnel and is deeply sensitive to their demands. Notably, it was highlighted that 26 states have already enacted legislation aimed at protecting healthcare workers, reflecting the broad recognition of the issue across the country.
To further address these concerns, the Ministry announced the formation of a dedicated committee tasked with recommending comprehensive measures to enhance the safety of healthcare professionals. This committee will include representatives from all relevant stakeholders, including state governments, to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach. The Ministry emphasized that the suggestions from these stakeholders would be instrumental in shaping effective and sustainable safety protocols.
In light of the current public health challenges, including the rising cases of dengue and malaria, the Ministry also urged the protesting doctors to return to their duties. The appeal was made in the larger interest of public health, underscoring the critical role that healthcare professionals play in managing these outbreaks.
