UK Biobank has announced the completion of its record-breaking initiative to collect full-body imaging data from 100,000 volunteers, marking a significant milestone in the world’s largest such project to date. The achievement, highlighted by the scanning of its 100,000th participant, provides scientists with access to more than one billion images of brains, hearts, abdomens, blood vessels, bones, and joints.

The imaging data, when combined with UK Biobank’s extensive records on lifestyle, environment, physical health, blood samples, and genetics, is transforming the ability of researchers to pinpoint how diseases develop and progress. This breakthrough is already influencing the early detection and treatment of major illnesses, including dementia, heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Steve, the 100,000th participant, shared his motivation:

“My wife and I signed up to UK Biobank because we wanted to give back to medical research. We’ve all had family members who’ve had health issues and we’re all getting older so if we can help scientists discover new ways to prevent and treat illness then that’s a worthwhile cause that we’re delighted to be part of. I’ve loved being the 100,000th UK Biobank participant to be scanned and the team at the imaging centre have all been amazing. The whole imaging day has been a great experience and it’s been really enlightening to learn even more about what UK Biobank is about.”

The scale and depth of this project are unprecedented. By collecting detailed organ images proactively—often before disease symptoms appear—scientists hope to better understand disease development, identify risk factors, and create new interventions that could one day help prevent disease altogether.

The initiative has secured widespread recognition in scientific and public circles for its potential to change how major chronic diseases are detected, diagnosed, and treated, offering hope to millions who may benefit from earlier interventions and more personalized healthcare.
