New Delhi, May 6, 2025 – In a significant step towards strengthening examination security and curbing impersonation, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) recently conducted a face authentication pilot during the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2024. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the National Testing Agency (NTA), aimed to verify candidates’ identities using advanced biometric technology.
The pilot was rolled out at select NEET examination centers across the country. Candidates were required to undergo face authentication using the Aadhaar database before entering the examination hall. According to officials, the process was seamless and did not cause any delays or inconvenience to the examinees.
UIDAI officials stated that the face authentication technology leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to match a candidate’s live facial image with their Aadhaar records. This method is considered more robust and less prone to errors compared to traditional biometric methods such as fingerprint or iris scans, especially in cases where fingerprints may be worn out or environmental factors affect accuracy.
The NTA, responsible for conducting NEET, welcomed the pilot, noting that impersonation and fraudulent activities have been persistent challenges in high-stakes exams. “The use of face authentication adds an extra layer of security and helps ensure that only genuine candidates are allowed to sit for the exam,” an NTA spokesperson said.
Based on the pilot’s success, UIDAI and NTA are considering expanding the use of face authentication in future examinations, including other national-level competitive tests. The move aligns with the government’s broader push for digital transformation and secure, technology-driven solutions in public services.
