The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has issued a directive prohibiting higher education institutions from offering healthcare and allied discipline programs, including psychology and nutrition, via online and distance learning starting from the 2025 academic session. This decision affects courses governed under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021, such as psychology, microbiology, food and nutrition science, biotechnology, clinical nutrition, and dietetics.

According to UGC Secretary Manish Joshi, no institution will be allowed to admit students into these programs through online or distance modes from July-August 2025 onward. Furthermore, any previous recognition granted to institutions to provide these courses online for the 2025 session will be withdrawn. In courses with multiple specializations, only those allied health specializations falling under the NCAHP Act will be discontinued in these modes.

This move follows concerns about maintaining quality standards in professional training. The ban was recommended during the 24th Distance Education Bureau Working Group meeting in April 2025 and finalized in a recent commission meeting. The UGC has reinforced its longstanding prohibition on offering professional and practical courses like engineering, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and others, through distance or online modes, emphasizing the need for hands-on training and practical exposure in such fields.

Implications of this ban are significant for students and institutions offering healthcare education through non-traditional modes, compelling a transition to regular, in-person education to meet accreditation norms and ensure competency in these critical healthcare professions.
