At least twelve deaths have been reported across the United States due to a multi-state outbreak of Listeria infections linked to frozen supplemental shakes, according to a statement from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Monday.

The outbreak has so far affected at least 38 people across 21 states, with 37 individuals requiring hospitalization. The majority of those affected were residents of long-term care facilities or were already hospitalized when they contracted the infection, the CDC said.

While the outbreak was traced back to 2018, more than half of the cases occurred in 2024 and 2025. Listeria outbreaks are known to persist for several years, as the bacteria can live on surfaces for an extended period, making it difficult to contain.

The CDC had previously investigated this strain of Listeria but was unable to pinpoint the exact source of the infections. This year, environmental testing and whole genome sequencing finally helped identify the source: frozen supplemental shakes served in institutional settings such as long-term care facilities.

As a result, all Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial frozen supplemental shakes that are still within their shelf life have been recalled. The CDC advises the public to avoid consuming these products and to clean refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled shakes.

Listeria bacteria can survive even in refrigerated environments, allowing it to spread to other foods and surfaces. The CDC has highlighted that certain groups, such as pregnant women, individuals aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to severe complications from Listeria infections.
