Las Vegas, NV — January 25, 2025
Former President Donald Trump, speaking at a rally in Las Vegas on Saturday, raised the possibility of the U.S. rejoining the World Health Organization (WHO). His comments come just days after his administration ordered the U.S. to exit the global health agency due to frustrations over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises.
“Maybe we would consider doing it again, I don’t know. Maybe we would. They would have to clean it up,” Trump remarked to the enthusiastic crowd, hinting at a potential reversal of his earlier decision to withdraw the U.S. from the WHO. The U.S. is set to officially leave the organization on January 22, 2026, a decision Trump announced shortly after his second inauguration.
The WHO, which is the principal international public health body, is heavily funded by the United States, contributing approximately 18% of its total budget. The organization’s two-year budget for 2024-2025 stands at $6.8 billion. Trump has previously expressed displeasure with the fact that the U.S. contributes more to the WHO than China, a nation with a much larger population.
In addition to his remarks on the WHO, Trump also discussed his foreign policy plans, announcing that he would request Saudi Arabia to significantly increase its investments in the U.S. from the previously agreed-upon $600 billion to $1 trillion. The announcement comes after discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who had indicated the kingdom’s willingness to bolster its economic engagement with the United States over the next four years.
