Guwahati, Assam – February 2, 2025
A 17-year-old girl from Assam has tragically passed away after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), marking the first known case of the rare neurological disorder in the state this season. According to sources at Pratiksha Hospital, the Class-12 student had been admitted to the facility 10 days ago with symptoms of GBS, a condition that causes sudden numbness, muscle weakness, and can lead to paralysis.
The girl, whose identity has not been disclosed, was initially treated at the hospital before doctors recommended advanced treatment at a specialized facility in Delhi. However, despite her family’s efforts to seek further care, the young student succumbed to the illness before she could be transferred.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome, although rare, has been reportedly spreading across India in recent months, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health. The syndrome, often triggered by viral infections, can lead to severe complications, including respiratory failure in extreme cases, and requires prompt medical intervention for the best chance of recovery.
As the situation develops, health experts are urging the public to be vigilant for early signs of GBS, especially in the wake of its recent rise. Symptoms include muscle weakness, tingling sensations, and rapid progression of paralysis.
