Gajapati, Odisha – A devastating incident in the Ramgiri village of Odisha’s Gajapati district has resulted in the deaths of two young sisters, aged six and three, sparking widespread outrage and calls for accountability. The children are suspected to have died from food poisoning after consuming ‘sattu’, a nutritious flour distributed by a local Anganwadi Centre, intended to address malnutrition in underweight children.

The tragedy unfolded on Sunday in Tulasi Nagar, leaving the community in shock and mourning. According to officials, the elder sister passed away while being rushed to the hospital, while the younger sister died during treatment. Their father, who also consumed the ‘sattu’, is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College Hospital.

The incident has triggered a political firestorm in the state. The opposition party, BJD, has vehemently demanded the resignation of the women and child development minister, citing gross negligence and failure to ensure the safety of food provided to vulnerable children.

“This is an unacceptable tragedy, and someone must be held responsible,” stated a spokesperson for the BJD. “The safety of our children is paramount, and we cannot tolerate such blatant disregard for their well-being.”

Authorities have responded by temporarily halting the distribution of ‘sattu’ across the region. Samples from the suspected batch have been sent for testing to determine the exact cause of the contamination. Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the source of the contamination and to identify any lapses in quality control.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and quality of food provided through government-run Anganwadi Centres, which play a crucial role in addressing malnutrition among children in rural areas. The community is demanding swift and decisive action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
