Rome – A suspected botulism outbreak has tragically claimed the life of a 52-year-old musician and artist in Italy, prompting a nationwide recall of broccoli. The victim, identified as Luigi Di Sarno, died after consuming a broccoli and sausage sandwich from a street vendor while on holiday with his family. Nine other people, including his family members, were hospitalized with symptoms consistent with the rare but potentially fatal illness.
The incident occurred in the Calabria region, where Di Sarno and his family stopped at a food truck on the seafront in Diamante. Shortly after eating the sandwich, Di Sarno fell ill and died before reaching the hospital. The other victims were rushed to Annunziata Hospital in Cosenza and placed in intensive care.
Italian authorities have acted swiftly, ordering the seizure of jars of broccoli preserved in oil, believed to be the source of the contamination, and impounding the food truck. The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Paola has launched an investigation into the incident. Health officials have also activated an emergency procedure to distribute a botulism antitoxin serum to treat the patients, as no regional hospitals are authorized to store the antivenom.
Botulism is a rare and serious illness caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The toxin attacks the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as muscle paralysis, breathing difficulties, and blurred vision. The condition can be fatal in a small percentage of cases. This outbreak follows a similar, unrelated incident in Sardinia last month, where eight people became ill after eating contaminated guacamole.
