Imphal, May 17, 2025 – In a heartbreaking incident, a fourth-semester BSc Nursing student at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, was found dead in her hostel room on the morning of May 14th. The deceased, identified as Ms. Abiel Sachiana Ch. Marak, 21, was a native of Rongram in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

According to official sources, Ms. Marak was discovered in Hostel No. 2 of Leibaklei House around 8:30 AM. Authorities believe she allegedly died by suicide, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation. The RIMS Media Cell expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “It is with deep sorrow that the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, condole the tragic death of a fourth-semester B.Sc. nursing student, Ms. Abiel Sachiana Ch. Marak, a native of Rongram in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya on the morning of Wednesday, May 14, 2025.”

A case of Unnatural Death (UD) has been registered at Lamphel Police Station under UD Case No. 8/LPS/2025, dated May 14, 2025. Police have examined the student’s phone and, at this stage, do not suspect foul play. However, the final cause of death will be determined following the post-mortem report.

In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has directed an Additional Deputy Commissioner to assist the bereaved family and facilitate their travel to Imphal. The RIMS community and the student’s family are currently awaiting further details as the investigation continues.

This incident has cast a pall over the RIMS campus and has raised concerns about student well-being and mental health. It follows a similar case reported earlier at AIIMS Bhopal, where another nursing student allegedly died by suicide.
