On the eve of the 2025 Tour de France, emotions are running high for Yoann Offredo. The former professional cyclist, now a consultant for France Télévisions, is experiencing this edition with particular intensity. Last April, Offredo revealed that he is suffering from a rare disease—progressive sarcoidosis—that is gradually attacking his eyes and could leave him permanently blind within the next two years.
It all began with a white spot in his field of vision, a symptom that led him to the ophthalmology emergency department at Cochin Hospital. After numerous tests and a five-week hospital stay, the diagnosis was confirmed: sarcoidosis affecting not only his eyes but also his lungs and brain. Since then, Offredo has been living with uncertainty, alternating between heavy treatments—including six months of chemotherapy and surgery in April—and daily resilience.
What troubles the father of two most is the fear of no longer being able to see his daughters, Aimy and Romy. “I tried to imprint images of my daughters in my mind because I was afraid I would never see them again,” he confides, describing the difficulty of imagining a future without being able to witness his children’s smiles and laughter.
Despite the illness, Yoann Offredo continues to cling to his passion for cycling, which has become a form of therapy for him. He now rides not for competition, but to stay focused in the face of pain and fear. “I can’t make plans for the future,” he admits, but he strives to live day by day, inspired by other athletes who have overcome similar challenges.
Today, Offredo shares his story and his fight, hoping to raise awareness and inspire those going through difficult times. His determination to never give up—on the roads of the Tour as well as in the face of illness—is truly admirable.
