Maintaining proper foot health is paramount for individuals with diabetes, as it can significantly impact nerves and blood supply to the feet, potentially leading to severe complications such as ulcers and limb amputations, warned a leading diabetologist on Tuesday.
Dr. V Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, emphasized the critical nature of foot care for individuals managing diabetes. In a post on X.com, he highlighted the unpredictability of nerve damage associated with diabetes and urged individuals to consult their doctors if they experience any changes in sensation in their toes, feet, or legs.
Diabetic foot, resulting from conditions like peripheral artery disease and diabetic neuropathy, ranks among the most common complications of diabetes. Studies indicate that approximately 85% of diabetes-related foot or leg amputations originate from foot ulcers.
Dr. Mohan shared essential tips for diabetic foot care, including maintaining blood glucose levels, daily foot washing, and thorough drying. He advised regular checks for fungal infections and recommended consulting specialists for conditions such as corns, calluses, or ingrown toenails, emphasizing against self-treatment.
With an estimated 15% of people with diabetes facing diabetic foot problems, and around 40,000 lower limb amputations occurring in India annually, Dr. Mohan stressed the importance of preventative measures. He urged diabetics to protect their feet from temperature extremes and refrain from walking barefoot, suggesting the use of socks with shoes to prevent skin irritation and infections.
Additionally, Dr. Mohan recommended engaging in regular non-impact exercises such as swimming, cycling, and yoga to enhance blood circulation and foot health.
As diabetes continues to pose significant health challenges globally, prioritizing foot care and adhering to preventive measures are essential steps in minimizing the risk of diabetic foot complications and preserving overall well-being.
