A California fitness influencer is facing a life-altering recovery after a rare tick-borne illness left her partially paralyzed, highlighting the severe risks associated with tick bites and the importance of early detection.

From Minor Aches to Sudden Paralysis

Maria Palen, a 25-year-old fitness coach and chemical engineer, first noticed minor aches and pains in early 2024. Initially dismissing the symptoms as minor, her condition quickly deteriorated. By March, she was bedridden, having lost 20 pounds, and found herself unable to perform simple tasks like locking her phone or turning her car’s steering wheel due to excruciating pain.

Doctors initially suspected an autoimmune disorder, but further testing revealed that Palen had contracted babesiosis—a rare parasitic infection transmitted by ticks that attacks red blood cells and can severely compromise the immune system. Blood tests also suggested possible Lyme disease, another serious tick-borne illness.

A Rapid Decline and Hospitalization

In October 2024, Palen’s symptoms became acute: she experienced severe pain, fever, and numbness that spread from her legs up to her belly button. Hospital tests revealed her spinal fluid was loaded with white blood cells, indicating her spinal cord was under attack, though doctors could not pinpoint the exact cause.

Despite an aggressive course of intravenous antibiotics that cleared the infection, the damage to her spinal cord was already done. Palen was left paralyzed from the waist down—a rare neurological complication of tick-borne infections. Doctors explained that inflammation from the infection had disrupted nerve signals, resulting in an incomplete spinal cord injury.

Road to Recovery and Community Support

Palen’s prognosis remains uncertain. Her medical team has given her a 33% chance of full recovery, a 33% chance of partial recovery, and a 33% chance of no recovery at all. She is now undergoing intensive rehabilitation, including daily physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and adaptive strength training. She uses assistive devices such as a wheelchair and leg braces as she works to regain mobility.

The illness has upended Palen’s life—she lost her apartment and career and is now living with family in Texas. A GoFundMe campaign launched in January 2025 has raised over $12,000 to help with mounting medical bills. Despite these challenges, Palen remains positive, celebrating small victories in her recovery and sharing her journey with followers on social media.

Understanding Tick-Borne Paralysis

Tick-borne illnesses like babesiosis and Lyme disease are rare but can have devastating effects. In addition to these, tick paralysis—caused by a neurotoxin injected by certain ticks—can also lead to rapid onset of paralysis, which typically reverses once the tick is removed. Experts stress the importance of early detection and prompt tick removal to prevent severe complications.

Prevention and Safety Tips

  • Wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing outdoors.

  • Perform daily tick checks on yourself, children, and pets.

  • Remove ticks promptly using fine-tipped tweezers.

  • Clean the bite area thoroughly and monitor for symptoms such as rash, fever, or muscle weakness.

  • Seek medical attention if symptoms develop within a month of a tick bite.
