The Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated the 5th Global Ayurveda Festival in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on December 01, 2023.

he Vice-President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, highlighted the pivotal role of Ayurveda as an accessible, non-invasive, effective, and holistic solution amid the rising prevalence of modern-day non-communicable and lifestyle diseases. Emphasizing Ayurveda’s focus on prevention, balance, and personalized care, he noted its seamless alignment with the global call for a sustainable and fair healthcare system. Speaking at the inaugural session of the 5th Global Ayurveda Festival in Thiruvananthapuram, the Vice-President underscored that Ayurveda transcends mere treatment of ailments, encompassing a comprehensive approach to overall wellness.

Commending the Ministry of AYUSH for establishing AYUSH Health & Wellness Centers nationwide under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, Shri Dhankhar hailed this as a significant step toward broader utilization of traditional medicine systems. He highlighted how this initiative could propel India closer to achieving universal healthcare by enhancing accessibility and delivery in remote areas. Recognizing the profound knowledge and practices embedded in ancient texts like the Atharva Veda, Charaka Samhita, and Sushruta Samhita, he emphasized Ayurveda’s profound insights into the human body, its maladies, and the therapeutic principles they entail.

The Vice-President stressed the paramount importance of health, stating that no matter one’s gifts or talents, an individual’s ability to contribute to societal growth is impeded without good health. Referring to ‘Yoga’ as Bharat’s gift to the world, he highlighted the significance of the ‘International Yoga Day,’ noting its inclusive nature and broad acceptance rooted in Indian ethos. He credited this phenomenon with showcasing Bharat’s cultural depth and richness, emerging as a soft power globally.

In the wake of the COVID pandemic, Shri Dhankhar acknowledged the resurgence of interest in Ayurveda, recognizing the individuals nationwide who leveraged Ayurveda effectively in combating the disease, offering significant service to humanity. He also acknowledged the role of telemedicine and digital platforms in extending AYUSH availability for disease management.

Appreciating the initiatives taken by both Central and State Governments to promote Ayurveda, the VP lauded the establishment of a dedicated AYUSH Ministry, the observance of National Ayurveda Day, and the integration of Ayurveda into the National Education Policy, recognizing these as testimonies to the government’s commitment to its advancement and integration into mainstream healthcare.

Highlighting Ayurveda’s all-encompassing approach to wellness beyond treating illnesses, the Vice-President reiterated its status as the “Science of Life,” emphasizing its ability to harmonize the soul, mind, and body for holistic well-being. He emphasized Ayurveda’s connection to nature, underscoring its role in reminding us of the importance of a natural environment that has been depleted over time.

Recognizing Kerala as a stronghold of Ayurvedic excellence, the Vice-President noted the Global Ayurveda Festival’s consistent role in upholding this ancient tradition since 2012. He expressed confidence that the convergence of global experts, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers would significantly shape the global health infrastructure. Reflecting on the trend of Wellness Tourism, the VP noted India’s suitability as a destination due to its holistic approach, combining traditional practices like Ayurveda with the serene beauty of nature.

Acknowledging Kerala’s prominence in Ayurvedic tourism, the Vice-President envisioned the state as a catalyst for significant change in attracting wellness tourism. Praising Kerala for its natural beauty, he expressed personal satisfaction in being in the state, owing gratitude to a mentor from Kerala, Ms. Ratnavali Nair.

In conclusion, Shri Dhankhar expressed hope that Ayurveda’s timeless wisdom would pave the way for a world where health and well-being are acknowledged as fundamental rights for all. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Shri V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India, Shri Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament, Shri Antony Raju, Minister for Transport, Government of Kerala, among others.
