The Trichy Corporation has initiated a “rabies-free city” campaign aimed at enhancing the immunity of stray dogs against rabies. This drive involves administering booster doses of the anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) to stray dogs that were sterilized in the past two years. The first phase targets 5,000 stray dogs, with the goal of completing the booster dose administration within a month. This effort is part of a broader strategy to maintain long-term immunity for the 21,770 stray dogs neutered and vaccinated since April 2023.
Key aspects of the initiative include:
Focus on Peripheral Wards: Based on a recent Dog Population Management (DPM) survey, eight peripheral wards with lower sterilization rates have been prioritized. These areas are also targeted for continued sterilization efforts to curb the stray dog population.
Booster Dose Administration: The ARV vaccine’s effectiveness typically lasts about a year. To ensure sustained immunity, booster doses will be administered regularly to all sterilized dogs. Neutered dogs are identified by notches in their ear lobes, and those receiving booster doses are marked with red spray paint for tracking.
Sterilization and Rabies Prevention: Alongside booster vaccinations, sterilization surgeries will continue. Two teams are dedicated to catching stray dogs for these procedures, while three teams focus on administering booster doses. This dual approach aims to control the canine population and prevent rabies transmission among dogs and humans.
Geographical Focus: Zone I (Srirangam) has achieved high sterilization coverage, while areas like Zone III (Thiruverumbur) and suburban regions such as Samayapuram are being brought under greater focus due to lower coverage and migration of stray dogs from rural areas.
The initiative underscores Trichy Corporation’s commitment to maintaining a rabies-free environment in the city, building on its success of reporting no rabies-related deaths in humans or animals over the past three years.
