In a sobering revelation, medical experts have underscored the profound impact of stress not only on mental well-being but also on physical health, as April marks Stress Awareness Month.
In today’s frenetic pace of life, individuals of all ages are grappling with unprecedented levels of pressure and stress, precipitating a surge in both mental and physical health challenges. Vipul Gupta, Director of Neurointervention and Co-Chief of the Stroke Unit at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, emphasized that stress can manifest in various bodily ailments, exacerbating existing health conditions and potentially leading to severe diseases.
“Stress doesn’t just affect our minds; it takes a toll on our bodies too,” Gupta told IANS. “From disrupting sleep patterns, which in turn heightens the risk of cardiovascular diseases, to triggering hormonal imbalances and digestive disorders, the impact of stress on physical health is profound and far-reaching.”
Gupta highlighted the physiological responses triggered by chronic stress, such as elevated levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which can disrupt normal bodily functions and contribute to the development of conditions like hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. Additionally, stress-related disruptions in gut motility can lead to digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastritis, while hormonal imbalances may culminate in reproductive issues for both men and women.
Echoing Gupta’s sentiments, a study by ICICI Lombard General Insurance in December 2023 revealed that a staggering one-third of the Indian population is grappling with stress, with 77 percent experiencing at least one stress symptom regularly.
Amidst the mounting prevalence of stress-related health issues, medical professionals emphasize the importance of adopting effective coping mechanisms. Counselling Psychologist Divya Mohindroo stressed the therapeutic benefits of mindfulness practices, meditation, deep breathing, and spending time in nature as strategies for managing stress.
“Mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can significantly alleviate stress levels, while spending time in nature offers a natural antidote to the pressures of daily life,” Mohindroo explained. “Moreover, seeking professional help is paramount when stress becomes overwhelming or starts manifesting in physical ailments.”
As Stress Awareness Month serves as a timely reminder to prioritize mental well-being, medical experts urge individuals to proactively seek support and adopt healthy coping mechanisms to mitigate the detrimental effects of stress on both mind and body.
